Die Bibel spielte eine grundlegende Rolle bei der Entwicklung der volkssprachlichen Literaturen. Einer ihrer wichtigsten Beiträge ist das biblische Exemplum, d. h. die Gesamtheit der von der Bibel und den Apokryphen inspirierten Anekdoten, die den religiösen Diskurs und später die volkssprachliche Literatur prägten. Dieses Buch bietet die erste umfassende theoretische Untersuchung dieser Art von Erzählung: ihre Definition und Typologie, ihre Verbreitung in der spanischen Literatur und ihre Anpassung an die Ideale des kastilischen Adels im Mittelalter.
Hugo O. Bizzarri (born 1956) is a full professor of Hispanic philology and language history at the University of Fribourg/Switzerland. He has been a visiting professor at the universities of Lausanne, Geneva and Sorbonne-Paris IV and at the ENS Lyon. He is currently Vice-President of the Asociación Hispánica de Literatura Medieval. He was president of the Medieval Institute at the University of Fribourg (2006-2008 and 2018-2020) and of the Sociedad Suiza de Estudios Hispánicos (2010-2011) and a member of the committee of the Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas (2010-2017). His areas of research are the tradition of proverbs and exempla of the Middle Ages and the Golden Age and the edition of texts. He has published 25 books and over 186 articles. His publications include studies such as Cuentos latinos de la Edad Media (2006), Diccionario de paremias cervantinas (2015), La otra mirada: el exemplum histórico (2019) and Manuscritos hispánicos y cultura vernácula en la Edad Media (2025); critical editions such as Íñigo López de Mendoza, Refranes que dizen las viejas entre el fuego (1995), Pero López de Ayala, Rimado de palacio (2012) and Jacobo Zadique de Uclés, Dichos de sabios (2019) and conference proceedings as Monde animal et végétal dans le récit bref du Moyen Âge (2018) and La mort du roi: réalité, littérature, répresentation (2021).

La Bible a joué un rôle fondamental dans le développement des littératures vulgaires. L’un de ses apports les plus importants est l’exemplum biblique, c’est-à-dire l’ensemble des anecdotes inspirées de la Bible et des Apocryphes qui ont illustré le discours religieux et, plus tard, les littératures vulgaires. Ce livre propose la première étude théorique et globale de ce type de récit : sa définition et sa typologie, sa diffusion dans la littérature vulgaire espagnole et son adaptation aux idéaux de la noblesse castillane au Moyen-Âge.
