Jahrhundert tiefgreifende Wandlungsprozesse erlebt. Die zunehmende Integration in die VR China hat äußerst diverse Formen von Entwicklung, Modernisierung und Urbanisierung selbst in entlegene Räume gebracht. In den 15 Kapiteln dieses Buches präsentieren tibetische, Han-chinesische und westliche Tibetforscher aus den Gesellschafts- und Umweltwissenschaften eine Auswahl von Perspektiven auf die jüngsten Transformationsprozesse. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage nach deren Bedeutung für die Gegenwart und Zukunft der Existenzsicherung tibetischer Nomaden im Rahmen der komplexen Rolle des chinesischen Staates. 01 02 Das tibetische Hochland umfasst die ausgedehntesten alpinen Weidegebiete der Welt. Sie haben eine einzigartige nomadische Gesellschaft, Kultur und Wirtschaftsweise hervorgebracht, in der auf der Basis von Yak- und Schafproduktion über komplexe Austauschsystemen mit Ackerbaugebieten und dem Tiefland und im Kontext sich ständig verändernder politischer Bedingungen Existenzsicherungssysteme entstanden, die es Hirtengesellschaften ermöglichte, sich nicht nur an die harten Umweltbedingungen anzupassen, sondern auch auf die sich ständig verändernden politischen und wirtschaftlichen Trends einzustellen. Das 20. Jahrhundert, insbesondere die immer engere Integration in den chinesischen Staat, hat einen einen tiefgreifenden Wandel der pastoralen Gesellschaften Tibets gebracht. Dieser hat das Hochland dem Einfluss einer breiten Palette von politischen Interventionen unterworfen, die auf die Entwicklung, Modernisierung und schließlich auch Urbanisierung der tibetischen Weidegebiete gerichtet sind. Dies hat selbst die entlegensten Räume mit den boomenden chinesischen Märkten verbunden und somit - indirekt - auch dem Weltmarkt. Nomadische Gemeinschaften erhalten damit Zugang zu neuen wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten, werden neuen Risiken ausgesetzt und in immer komplexere Warenketten integriert. Lokal spürbare Auswirkungen des Klimawandels, des demografischen Wandels, der Einfluss neuer Lebensstile und Konsummuster sowie neue Muster der Reichtums- und Armutsverteilung und Formen gesellschaftlicher Polarisierung machen das Bild zudem komplexer. Der vorliegende Band diskutiert die Frage nach der Zukunft des tibetischen Nomadismus/Pastoralismus. Angeleitet durch den Sustainable Livelihood-Ansatz bietet er eine Auswahl aktueller Perspektiven auf diese jüngsten Transformationen und deren spezifische Auswirkungen auf die lokalen nomadischen Existenzsicherungssysteme. In 15 Kapiteln umreißen tibetische, Han-chinesische und westliche Tibetforscher aus Sozial- und Umweltwissenschaften in Feldforschungs-basierten lokale Fallstudien verschiedene Blickwinkel der jüngsten Transformationsprozesse und deren Bedeutung für die Lebenshaltung und Existenzsicherung pastoraler Gruppen. Mit Blick auf die komplexe Rolle des (chinesischen) Staates, der (neuen) Märkte und der Weideressourcen veranschaulichen sie, wie die pastoralen Lebensgrundlagen im tibetischen Hochland gegenwärtig und in der Zukunft gestaltet werden. <br/> 01 02 The Tibetan plateau constitutes the world’s vastest high-altitude rangeland. It has featured a unique pastoralist culture where, based on yak and sheep production, on complex exchange systems with agricultural areas and the lowlands, and in the context of ever-changing political conditions, pastoralists developed livelihood systems that helped them adapt not only to the harsh environmental conditions, but also to the ever-changing political and economic trends. The 20th century, most prominently the plateau’s ever closer integration into the Chinese state, has brought profound changes to pastoral Tibetans. It has opened the plateau to the influence of a wide array of policies directed at ‘developing’, modernizing, and recently urbanizing the Tibetan pastoral areas. It has also connected even the remotest community to the booming Chinese markets and - indirectly - the world market. Pastoral communities, thus, are being opened up to new economic opportunities, exposed to new risks and integrated into increasingly complex commodity chains. Local consequences of climate change, the demographic transition, new lifestyles and consumption patterns, and new forms of wealth/poverty and social polarization further complicate the picture. The present volume discusses the question of possible futures of Tibetan pastoralism. After many years of work experience in the tourism sector in Tibetan areas and China, he became a researcher at the research center ‘Difference and Integration’ based at Leipzig University, where he worked from 2004 to 2012. Since 2012, he has held a professorship at the Faculty of Social Development and Western China Development Studies at Sichuan University, China. His research interests focus on the multiple transformations of nomadic societies, rural livelihoods, and on the impact of tourism development in Western China.<br/><br/>Ingo Breuer earned his PhD in Human Geography at Freiburg University, Germany. He has held a professorship at the Faculty of Social Development and Western China Development Studies at Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, since 2014. From 2001 to 2012, he was a researcher and project leader at the ‘Difference and Integration’ research center based at Leipzig University, Germany, leading research projects in North Africa and the Middle East.
