However, the cemetery has never been the subject of a comprehensive investigation. This volume offers for the first time an overall picture of the research history, the funeral customs and the material culture of Orientalizing Vetulonia. The study is aimed at recontextualizing the grave complexes and is based on the unpublished original documentation and on the corpus of finds. New insights on the social development of Vetulonia are offered, in particular on the emergence the ‘gentilician’ society and the phenomenon of the ‘princely graves’. Die Ausgrabungen des 19. und des frühen 20. Jhs. im Gräberfeld der etruskischen Stadt Vetulonia förderten eine Reihe von reich ausgestatteten sog. Fürstengräber der orientalisierenden Periode (Ende 8. – Anfang 6. Jh. v. Chr.) zutage. Trotz der großen Bedeutung der Fundstelle blieb eine Auswertung vieler Fundkomplexe aus. Die vorliegende Studie bietet erstmals ein Gesamtbild über die Forschungsgeschichte, die Grabsitten und die materielle Kultur der orientalisierenden Periode in Vetulonia und berücksichtigt die bisher unbekannte originale Dokumentation sowie das erhaltene Fundmaterial. Die Rekontextualisierung der Bestattungen ermöglicht neue Einblicke in die soziale Entwicklung Vetulonias, insbesondere wird das Aufkommen der ‚gentilizischen‘ Struktur und der sog. Fürsten analysiert. La necropoli del centro etrusco di Vetulonia è stata indagata in modo estensivo tra la fine dell’800 e l’inizio del ’900, portando alla scoperta di ricche sepolture ‘principesche’ databili nel periodo orientalizzante (fine VIII – inizio VI secolo a. C.). Ciò nonostante, numerosi complessi sono rimasti sostanzialmente sconosciuti. Il presente volume traccia per la prima volta un quadro d’insieme sulla storia degli scavi, sull’evoluzione dei costumi funerari e sulla cultura materiale della Vetulonia orientalizzante. L’analisi si basa sull’ampia documentazione originale inedita e sui corredi conservati. La ricontestualizzazione dei complessi tombali permette nuove considerazioni sullo sviluppo sociale di questo importante centro, in particolare sull’emergere della società ‘gentilizia’ e delle figure di ‘principi’. 03 00 The work, written in Italian, deals with the cemetery of the Etruscan settlement of Vetulonia and its evolution during the Orientalising period (late 8th - early 6th century BC). Principal focus of the research are the question of the formation of the so-called princely tombs and the gentilician society in Vetulonia and their detection in the structure and development of the cemetery - both phenomena that have been observed in other Etruscan necropolis of the Orientalizing period. The necropolis of Vetulonia was excavated mainly by the physician Isidoro Falchi in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and only occasionally studied in later times. The results of this research were only partially published: For this reason, an overarching study of the material and the necropolis of Vetulonia as a whole has long been a desideratum of archaeological research. The book "La necropoli di Vetulonia nel periodo orientalizzante" examines for the time all excavation campaigns in Vetulonia and offers a comprehensive overview of the Orientalising period in Vetulonia, its development and characteristics in this important Etruscan centre. The over 1000 images and the extensive catalogues on CD offer for the first time a comprehensive material basis for the future scientific research on Vetulonia. The study consists of three parts, in which the central aspects of the cemetery are examined: the history of research, the grave-finds and the cultural-historical significance. The starting point for the first part was the original excavation documentation (1882-1913) and the excavation reports published by the excavator. The analysis and comparison with the preserved grave-finds made it possible to reconstruct the individual grave inventories and to examine their composition as well as to reconstruct a new plan of the cemetery. The second part of the study deals in detail with the graves of the Orientalising period and considers the grave typology, the funerary rituals and the grave goods. In particular, the approximately 4,000 finds that have survived are subjected to a detailed study and typologically structured. The cultural-historical aspects are treated in the third part of the study. The typologically classified material is divided into chronological phases using the statistical methods of seriation and correspondence analysis. The graves are then subjected to a series of reflections based on the composition of their inventories, architecture, dating and location in the necropolis. In particular, observations are made on the distinction between men's and women's graves, on the distribution of weapons and the distribution of certain rank insignia (such as wagons and bridles, elements of the banquet and wine consumption, keimelia). The combinations of such rank insignia lead to an attempt to characterize "princely graves". The chronological and topographic distribution of the "princely graves" and of the other burials is then analysed: Throughout the Orientalising period, both the old Villanovan burial grounds and new burial grounds are used. However, the " princely graves" are mostly set in new places and are surrounded by small groups of graves over time. They seem to express a desire to differentiate themselves from the rest of society by seeking new burial sites for their own clan. This development is eventually linked to the formation of a gentilician society. Die auf Italienisch verfasste Arbeit behandelt die Nekropole der etruskischen Siedlung von Vetulonia und ihre Entwicklung im Laufe der orientalisierenden Zeit (Ende 8. – Anfang 6. Jh. v. Chr.). Im Zentrum der Untersuchung stehen die Frage nach der Ausbildung der sog. Fürstengräber und der gentilizischen Gesellschaft sowie ihr Nachweis in der Struktur und Entwicklung des Gräberfeldes – Phänomene, die in anderen etruskischen Nekropolen dieser Epoche beobachtet werden konnten. Die Nekropole von Vetulonia wurde hauptsächlich vom Arzt Isidoro Falchi im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert ausgegraben und nur vereinzelt in späterer Zeit untersucht. Die Resultate dieser Erforschung wurden nur teilweise veröffentlicht und aufgearbeitet, aus diesem Grund bildete eine übergreifende Studie über das Material und über die Nekropole Vetulonias als Ganzes lange Zeit ein Desiderat der archäologischen Forschung. Mit dem Band „La necropoli di Vetulonia nel periodo orientalizzante“ werden erstmals alle Grabungskampagnen in Vetulonia behandelt und ausgewertet und eine umfassende Übersicht über die orientalisierende Periode als Ganzes, ihre Entwicklung und ihre Charakteristika im diesem wichtigen Zentrum dargelegt. Die über 1000 s/w und Farbabbildungen und die umfangreichen Kataloge auf CD bieten zum ersten Mal eine umfassende Materialbasis für die künftige wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit Vetulonia. Die Studie umfasst drei Teile, in denen die zentralen Aspekte des Gräberfeldes untersucht werden: die Forschungsgeschichte, das Fundmaterial und die kulturhistorische Bedeutung. Ausgangspunkt für den ersten Teil bildeten die originale Grabungsdokumentation (1882-1913) sowie die vom Ausgräber veröffentlichten Grabungsberichte. Die Analyse und der Vergleich mit den noch erhaltenen Funden haben es ermöglicht, die einzelnen Grabinventare zu rekonstruieren und ihre Zusammensetzung zu prüfen sowie eine neue Planimetrie der Nekropole zu rekonstruieren. Der zweite Teil der Studie befasst sich im Detail mit den Gräbern der orientalisierenden Periode. Dabei werden Aspekte der Grabtypologie, des Ritus und der Grabbeigaben behandelt. Insbesondere die ca. 4’000 noch erhaltenen Funde werden einer detaillierten Studie unterzogen und typologisch gegliedert. Die kulturhistorischen Aspekte werden im dritten Teil behandelt. Das typologisch eingeteilte Material wird mithilfe der statistischen Methoden von Seriation und Korrespondenzanalyse in chronologische Phasen unterteilt. Die Gräber werden anschließend auf der Grundlage der Komposition ihrer Inventare, der Architektur, der Datierung und der Lage in der Nekropole einer Reihe von Überlegungen unterzogen. Insbesondere werden Beobachtungen zur Unterscheidung zwischen Männer- und Frauengräbern, zur Verteilung von Waffen und zur Verteilung von gewissen Rangabzeichen (wie etwa Wagen und Trensen, Elemente des Banketts und des Weinkonsums, Keimelia) angestellt. Die Kombinationen solcher Rangabzeichen führen zum Versuch einer Charakterisierung von „Fürstengräbern“. Die chronologische und topographische Verteilung der „Fürstengräber“ und der anderen Bestattungen wird anschließend analysiert: Im Laufe der gesamten orientalisierenden Epoche werden sowohl die seit Jahrhunderten bekannten großen Villanova-Gräberfelder als auch neue Bestattungsareale benutzt. Die „Fürstengräber“ entstehen allerdings mehrheitlich an neuen Orten und werden mit der Zeit von kleinen Gräbergruppen umschlossen. Sie scheinen somit einen Wille zur Abgrenzung von der übrigen Gesellschaft durch die Suche nach neuen Bestattungsarealen für den eigenen Clan zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Diese Entwicklung wird schließlich in Zusammenhang mit der Ausbildung einer gentilizischen Gesellschaft gebracht. 06 00 „This handsomely produced volume is profusely illustrated and the accompanying CD contains two extensive catalogues in searchable PDF format (tombs; grave goods by type). With a dissertation on the Etruscan cemetery of Vetulonia in the Orientalizing period, she received her doctorate in March 2014 at the University of Basel. She has been scientific assistant at the University of Basel and since 2016 she is researcher at the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute. Her research interests include Etruscology and pre-roman Italian Archeology, the Precolonial period in Southern Italy, funerary Archeology and Cultural Contacts. Camilla Colombi (1980) hat Klassische Archäologie, Vorderorientalische Archäologie und Alte Geschichte an der Universität Basel – mit einem Auslandsjahr in Florenz – studiert. Mit einer Dissertation zur etruskischen Nekropole von Vetulonia in der orientalisierenden Periode wurde sie im März 2014 an der Universität Basel promoviert. Sie war zunächst Assistentin an der Universität Basel und ist seit 2016 wissenschaftliche Referentin bei der Abteilung Rom des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts.
