Thomasin von Zerclaere's 'Welsh Guest' is a Middle High German behavioural theory from around 1215/16, with an extensive picture cycle. At first glance, the text may appear to be a jumbled collection of individual admonitions, undergirded by recordings from encyclopaedic sources of knowledge. The present study shows that, on closer inspection, the numerous individual admonitions combine to form a well-planned, coherent whole that aims to initiate cognitive processes in the recipient.
