Im Gesamtbestand des Museo Gregoriano Profano sind die Historischen Reliefs mit 20 Denkmälern eine zahlenmäßig wenig umfangreiche aber überaus wichtige Gruppe. Sie umfasst neben kaum bekannten Stücken auch zentrale Werke der römischen Kunst wie die Reliefs von der „Ara der Vicomagistri“, die „Großen Cancelleria-Reliefs“ und den „Larenaltar vom Belvedere“, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten intensiv und oft kontrovers diskutiert worden sind. Auch weniger prominente Reliefs, die zum Teil wegen ihres Erhaltungszustandes schwierig zu deuten sind, erweisen sich durch die eingehenden Untersuchungen als aufschlussreiche Zeugnisse öffentlicher Monumente.

Der Katalog erfüllt also nicht alle Wünsche,
hat aber das unbestreitbare Verdienst, daß er
in aller Klarheit darlegt, welche Befunde eindeutig
und für jede künftige Beschäftigung mit
den Denkmälern maßgeblich sind und wo die
Grenze zur Spekulation zu ziehen ist. Auch als
Referenzwerk ist es für jede Fachbibliothek unverzichtbar.
